Obesity has become a common health disorder in adults and children around the world. It gets worse in pregnant women as it may also affect the baby inside the womb. Obesity or overweight during pregnancy may lead to various health risks such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, chances of cesarean delivery etc. some of the health risks involved with obesity during pregnancy are discussed below:

  •  Loss of pregnancy: Obesity or overweight gained during pregnancy is associated with miscarriage and stillbirth, so it is necessary to consider reducing weight.
  • C-section and labour issues: Women who are overweight and obese while pregnant have more chances of emergency c-section and labour issues such as interfering with the labour pain medications etc. Post c-section delivery, it causes delayed healing and risk of wound infection.
  • Pregnancy overdue: The pregnancy might extend even after the expected delivery date if the mother is obese.
  • Kids with obesity: The children born to obese mother are likely to develop obesity according to recent researches.
  • Birth defects: Obesity during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects in the newborns. Babies of obese mothers are about 3.5 times more susceptible to neural tube defects (spina bifida) when compared to other babies.
  • Preeclampsia: This is a pregnancy disorder characterized by increased blood pressure and presence of protein in the urine. It causes swelling in the feet, legs, hands etc., change in reflexes, headache and dizziness.
