In the present age, a pregnant woman can handle work, children and do everything independently but it is crucial to consider safety measures to avoid any mishap. An expectant mother should consider safety car rules while travelling, some of which are as follows:

  • Fasten your seat belts: Pregnancy is not an excuse to avoid seat belts as it protects you and your baby. If the tummy is big, you can still wear the seat belt in a comfortable position. Try wearing the belt below your bump and across the upper thighs while the shoulder harness over your shoulder and between the breasts.
  • Don’t drive in the third trimester: You can drive in the initial stages of pregnancy but it is better to avoid in the last few weeks. Even entering the car or sitting in the driver seat would be difficult so it is advisable to take the back seat.
  • Airbags are not a bad idea: If you fasten your seat belts, airbags are nothing to worry about as they are designed to protect you from accidents even if you are pregnant.
  • Adjust the car seats: Adjusting your seat position while travelling in a car will help you overcome travel discomforts. If you are driving, try to maintain at least 10 inches distance between you and the wheel. Also leave enough space for your legs to rest or change position, if you are on the passenger seat.
  • Stack up your snacks: If you are planning on a long road trip, it is necessary to stack your bag with healthy snacks and water. Do not forget to stop every 1.5 hours for rest and toilet breaks.
  • Don’t travel for a longer time: Limit your driving period and do not travel for more than 6 hours in a day during your third trimester.
  • Use pillows for comfort: If you have backache, try using small cushions behind your back which will ease your pain. You can also use head rest to get better sleep while travelling for long hours.
  • Keep the emergency bag ready: Prepare an emergency bag with your vitamins, necessary medications and emergency contact numbers along with some cash to face any situation.
  • Use Pregnancy bumper stickers: Just like the ‘baby on board’ stickers, there are also car stickers available to indicate pregnant woman driving. This will ensure safety while driving in traffic or congested roads.
  • Drive only when it is necessary: Do not overload yourself in the first trimester. If you have dizzy head, nausea or indigestion, it is better to take rest and avoid driving. Analyze your health condition and drive only if it is necessary.
