Second Trimester Healthy Foods for Pregnant Women

Pregnancy in the second trimester is expected to be a stress free and active period, as most of the pregnancy discomforts disappear including morning sickness, frequent urination, food aversion, indigestion etc. This is the right time to eat well, but make sure the food is healthy and fresh to avoid excessive weight gain and any food borne infection. Some of the healthy second trimester foods include:

  • Colour Vegetables: Green vegetables can be consumed in all three trimesters as it provides a nutritional boost through its vitamin, mineral and fibre content. Do include beans, carrot, beetroot, cabbage, okra, broccoli, greens etc.
  • Mushrooms: Mushrooms are rich in nutrients and also good on maintaining your body weight during second trimester. Add mushroom with brown rice or wheat rotis for better results.
  • Dry Fruits: Have a practice of including dried fruits in your everyday diet which are loaded with iron, calcium and fibre. You can either have it in the morning or in between the day as snacks. This includes apricots, fig, almonds, raisins, dates etc.
  • Milk and dairy products: calcium is required in the second trimester for the development of the baby. Have a glass of skimmed milk and other dairy products such as plain yogurt, buttermilk etc. Instead of dairy products, you can have soya milk and soya based products.
  • Fish: Omega-3-fatty acid is required for the normal development of the baby and it is rich in fish meat. Have properly cooked fish more often to avoid any growth related conditions in the baby. However, it is advisable to avoid fish with high mercury content.
  • Peanut Butter: During pregnancy, the nutrient value of peanut butter can suffice the additional energy requirement of the body. Pair it with whole wheat bread for breakfast. However, limit your intake as it may contribute to increase in your body weight.
  1. Pasta: Having whole wheat pasta or tossed salad once a week is acceptable. However, try to minimize outdoor dining and cheese filled dishes. Once a month, you can treat yourself with dark chocolate or low fat ice cream.
