Week 1

In the first week after birth, your baby is getting used to her new surroundings outside the womb. A newborn spends almost 14 hours a day sleeping. She requires your touch and warmth and hence it is important to hold your baby close to you for her to get the comfort of the womb and also start recognizing your features and voices.


Week 2

By the second week, the little one begins her reflexes such as grasping and blinking. If you observe frequent bouts of crying, your baby is probably colicky. Colic could be due to various reasons including the development of the baby’s digestive system or the reaction to certain elements in the breast milk. Usually, babies grow out of this phase within 3 months. Here are some tips to help calm a baby with colic:

If you received tons of advice during pregnancy, you can expect to receive twice as much advice on breastfeeding. Just like how pregnancy and childbirth is unique to each woman, the experience of breastfeeding also varies among mothers and babies. Breastfeeding is a skill and it takes time for new mothers to master it. The key is to not get anxious and keep trying until you find the sweet spot at which your baby latches on. Here are some unique tips to help you get settled with this beautiful experience:

  • Skin-skin contact is important. Keep your baby close to you. This will help soothe him and get comfortable for feed
  • Feed your baby each time through both breasts. Allow your baby to choose the one that he is most comfortable with.
  • Heal soreness of nipples with few drops of breast milk itself. Do not use wet tissues or other chemicals as they may be ingested by your baby.
  • Do not set timeframes for feeds. Your baby may take just few minutes for one feed and much longer for another feed.
  Burp the baby after every feed
  Gently rock the baby or carry her around in a sling
  Watch what you eat. Avoid spicy food, high-fiber grains and caffeine. These can directly get to your baby through your milk
