Infusion of Umbilical Cord Stem Cells to Prevent the Onset of Type 1 Diabetes in children

Lucy Hinchion, a 20 months old kid becomes the youngest recipient in the world to receive an infusion of her own umbilical cord stem cells to prevent the onset of Type 1 diabetes at The Children’s Hospital in Westmead.

Lucy, an Australia-based toddler from Sydney was re-infused with her own umbilical cord blood stem cells which were used for her sister to treat Type 1 diabetes.

Doctor’s claim that the umbilical cord blood comprises of unique regulatory T-cells which are immune cells and stem cells which are promising enough to improve the treatment of several diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and neurological disorders.

In Australia, more than 100 children with a family history of Type 1 diabetes are secured with Cord blood reinfusion according to the study conducted by Hospital’s Kids Research Institute

Lucy’s mom told the press that Lucy’s cord blood was stored at birth with the hope, it will subsequently help her elder daughter, Ava with Type 1 diabetes before she turned four.

She also remarked how they failed to save Ava’s cord blood since there was no family history of this disease ever. Now after the positive presence of 2 different antibodies, she understands that Lucy also could be at high risk of developing the condition. With this apprehension, Lucy’s cord blood that was cryo-preserved was used for 20 minutes brief procedure last week. She beckons the every parent to preserve their child’s umbilical cord stem cells as it is an easy and straightforward procedure.

This procedure of infusion is really worth a try or any parent of the child who develops diabetes would feel like kicking themselves for not trying. Nearly, 1,30,000 Aussies today are living with this chronic condition of diabetes with over 2000 new cases being diagnosed, annually.

Lucy’s mom is so proud of her daughter Ava for handling her Type 1 Diabetes “beautifully” the child has learnt to check on her sugar levels diligently multiple times in a day and also watch every food she eats. But also feels sad for her daughter as diabetes is 24 hours, 7 day affair. So naturally when it recurred with Lucy it was a no-brainer for us to combat the condition at any cost. She goes on to recommend storing cord blood to other families where the disease prevails too. Since the stored umbilical cord stem cells have no shelf-life it can be of use anytime in your lives.

The research lead Professor Maria Craig said regular follow-up will be done in Lucy’s case every 3-6 months for the next few years to chart out the response of reinfusion..
