Japanese researchers from Kyoto University ventured a remarkable trial on human brain after a successful trial to keep Parkinson’s disease in monkeys off, using stem cells. Building on the earlier trials in animals , the researchers conducted their first human trial by injecting 5 million stem cells into the patient’s brain. These stem cells have the potential to develop into any cell , since it is injected into the patient’s brain it develops into neurons.

It is expected that stem cells from healthy donors can develop into brain cells that produce dopamine. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that is caused by deficiency of dopamine. The condition is accompanied by tremors, movement disorders and dementia that causes severe disability to the patient. So, since the stem cells injected are expected to produce sufficient levels of dopamine, the main cause for the disorder, it can definitely help in improving the patient’s condition.

Worldwide, nearly 10 million patients suffer with Parkinson’s Disease, currently. Clinical trials done last year on monkeys have also shown positive functioning of the brain cells. The research associates mentioned last year that the primates showing Parkinson’s traits regained their mobility after the infusion of stem cells into their brains. The important part of the study is to extract stem cells from healthy individuals.

If this works, similar cells can be infused for several conditions that can defer the progression of various conditions. The cells as they begin to engraft gradually slows and halts the disease.
In the coming years scientists are willing to begin their research on reversing the disease as well.

The study has employed 7 participants between the age of 50 to 69. The researchers of the study have also planned to follow the participants for a period of 2 years after infusion. They have done this to make sure that these cells have not transformed themselves into tumors. The entire research is backed up by the Japanese government. The government is also funding several other clinical trials using these cells for another age-related conditions such as macular degeneration.
