Though the development of a complete eye using stem cells might take a little longer, it is definitely a promise for the future. The hospital has been conducting research using stem cells for over a decade, primarily focussing on developing the human eye. Now the breakthrough has occurred, as they have succeeded in developing a small 3D corneal organoids. These organoids are a miniature model of larger eyes developed within the test tube.
The researchers generated these complex 3D corneal organoids from pluripotent stem cells. These mini corneas developed were made to mature in the test tube and progress in growth, as a normal cornea.
The development of such corneal masterpieces can cease the need for several complicated cell enrichment protocols. Regenerative therapy application using stem cells reviving the damaged corneal epithelial cell sheets is a wonderful alternative to other current treatments.
The researchers also said that pluripotent stem cells are a sure alternative to generate several other body cells. Eventually, several three-dimensional tissues can also be developed using them in a test tube, which can be of immense therapeutic value.
3D retinal and corneal organoids emerged as primordial clusters by the differentiation of pluripotent stem cells. They gradually developed into whole eyeball-like self-organized structures. These structures like the eye had the primordial cornea, retina, eyelid and ciliary margins and were developed over a period of 15 weeks.
