Becoming a mother is one of the greatest joys of womanhood and the thought of having that ‘bundle of joy’ might make you forget all the discomforts of pregnancy. Most women are not sure how to check if they are pregnant and do not want to approach the doctor without basic confirmation.
Here are some facts which will help you to assess, if the signs are pointing you towards motherhood:
A Missed Period is a Basic Sign
If you have regular periods and if it is delayed this month by over 10 days, there are chances that you might be pregnant. However, delay in periods also suggests other reasons such as anorexia or contraceptive medication. If you spot a missed period, take up a home pregnancy test or consult a physician.
Observe the Body Changes
Apart from the missing period, you might also experience the following symptoms which are associated with pregnancy:
Nausea, vomiting, bloating of the body, soreness of the nipples, backache, stress, mood swings, headache, craving for food etc. These are the pregnancy symptoms that occur in the first trimester so if you are facing these changes along with a missed period then this could be the time to book a doctor’s appointment.
This is a positive symptom of pregnancy. As the hormone levels increase, the blood flow rushes to the kidney, causing the bladder to become full. This results in frequent urination in pregnant women; if you rush to the rest room every 30-40 minutes, then it could be good news.
Home Pregnancy Test
If you have missed your period then home pregnancy test is the simplest option to get basic confirmation of pregnancy. This simple and convenient test works on a urine sample and gives an accurate result within 30 minutes. If the home pregnancy kit gives a positive result, visit your doctor to get a confirmation. It is always better to have a medical confirmation about pregnancy than solely relying on the home pregnancy test result.
The doctor will order for a blood test to check the presence of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) hormone to confirm pregnancy. Usually, this test gives reliable results even at the early stages so it can be performed after you missed your period.
Internal Physical Examination
Only after 2 weeks of your missed period, the doctor can perform an internal examination. The doctor will check the changes in the uterus and cervix to confirm your pregnancy.
