Real life testimony: Crystal Day wins over Leukemia with Cord Blood Stem Cells

Cord blood stem cells infused into Crystal Day at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre and Seattle Cancer care alliance showed the potency of cord blood transplant to win over Leukemia.

Crystal was initially diagnosed with Leukemia in the year 2010, she counted on chemotherapy to ward off her first spell of cancer, off-course the therapy worked well and she was off its symptoms till 2014.  Again in 2014, the disease struck her back like the eye of the storm; it was an awful boomerang that made the doctors feel it was a death sentence as Crystal was not responding to chemo anymore. The only ray of hope, Crystal was left with was to rely on stem cells, they ransacked the registries to source a donor to match her, but in vain.

With no bone marrow matches in sight, Doctors at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre and Seattle Cancer care alliance came up with the idea to subject her with cord blood transplant. It was a very easy procedure of extracting the stem cells from a baby’s umbilical cord and infusing into the patient via intravenous fluids.

Remarkably after the cord blood transplant, Crystal started to improve immediately and now she is free from cancer for the past 2 years. Crystal and team of doctors feel that cord blood stem cell transplant is the new found hope for patients battling Leukemia. Following which the doctors conducted a new study to authenticate the potency of cord blood stem cells to fight cancer.

The New Study showed the potency of cord blood transplant to fight cancer:

The doctors said they were excited to consider cord blood stem cells as a mainstream source to treat cancer patients, after the study. They also quoted that their probe into 600 patients treated between 2006 to 2014 with either cord blood and unrelated adult donors showed promising results with cord blood transplants over the other.

This study also showed better outcomes and reduced relapse rate in high-risk in Leukemia patients after a cord blood transplant. This surprisingly better result of cord blood stem cells compared to conventional sources of stem cells used for transplants such as adult and unrelated donor stem cells drew the attention of doctor’s to it.

Cord blood stem cells were always considered as an alternative source of stem cell for several years when the process of finding a perfect match for the patient was crucial. But now having known the potency of cord blood transplant with this study, we can be sure of its amazing results and no more consider it as a feasible alternative.

Since umbilical cord stem cells are less developed than adult sources of stem cells, matching them with the patient was much easier, despite their non-compliance of being a perfect match unlike traditional stem cells used. Moreover, the access to cord blood donor was easier and everybody could get a donor right away.

Leukemia survivor-Crystal also reinforced the study by claiming that umbilical cord stem transplant saved her life and cord blood transplant were more than just an option.

Doctor’s Advice for to-be parents: Preserve your baby’s cord blood stem cells

Doctors also obliged her claims by quoting that the procedure was so easy and thus encouraging parents to indulge in the act of preserving their baby’s umbilical cord stem cells at birth can turn out very helpful for themselves and others in the future.
