  • Maintain a Healthy Diet and Schedule 
    Pregnancy comes with nausea for most women, but that shouldn't stop you from eating healthy and covering up for all the nutrition. Eat small but frequent meals that are full of protein and fibre. Also, ensure you do not skip breakfast. 
  • Drink Enough Fluids
    Whether you indulge in smoothies, juices, or just water with a few lemon wedges in it, you should aim for 8-12 glasses of water daily. Especially during hot weather. 
  • Get Proper Sleep
    Ensure to maintain a proper sleep routine and use supportive pillows. If you are in your third trimester, you can invest in a good sleeping pillow and a supportive pregnancy pillow to help you sleep better. If you are in your first trimester, you can sleep on your left side. This can help to reduce pressure on your major blood vessels.

    You can try several methods to relax. Activities like meditation, deep breathing, and journaling can help to manage stress. Some women even love listening to music during pregnancy, as that can help calm their senses. 
  • Improve your Posture
    Avoid slouching and sitting when pregnant. If you are supposed to sit for a longer duration, sit with back support and take frequent breaks. 
  • Limit the Triggers
    Maintain a diary to identify triggers for recurring headaches. Note whether it's certain foods, strong fragrances around, or bright lights. Some women can also be triggered by noise and excessive screen time. 

When Should I Call a Doctor or Midwife About a Headache in Pregnancy?

  • You have severe, constant headaches 
  • You have sudden and intense pain 
  • A headache with blurred vision 
  • Headache accompanied by swelling of the face, hands, and feet 
  • A headache that comes along with high blood pressure 
  • A headache that is followed by a fall 
  • Dizziness or fainting 
  • Changes in speech, along with a headache 
  • Preeclampsia: A severe headache that is accompanied by high blood pressure, swelling on the face, and blurry vision can be a serious complication that requires urgent care. 18

Does Pregnancy Cause Migraines?

Pregnancy cannot cause migraines, but it may affect women differently. Some women experience new migraines during pregnancy with an increased frequency or stronger intensity.
