In India, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, and will thus fall on the 14th of May this year!
Ancient Times: Early accounts of Mother’s Day celebrations in history date back to ancient times, when the Greeks and Romans held galas to honor the goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Both these goddesses were regarded as the symbols of motherhood, fertility, agriculture and nature! Furthermore, the Christian festival of “Mothering Sunday,” which was seen as a more devout day. As people would return to their “mother church,” or the primary church in their area on this day to attend a special prayer service.
However, over time, the Mother’s Day celebration has transformed into a more secular day!
Modern Times: The version of Mother’s Day you celebrate today originated in the 19th century when an American activist Ann Reeves Jarvis decided to have a club with all the mothers in her area. In this club, she used to teach all the fellow moms how to properly take care of their children and also named it “Mother’s Day Work Club.”
Later, when Anna Maria Jarvis (the daughter of Ann Jarvis) grew up, she wanted to honor her mother along with all the mothers throughout the world for their selfless love and care. Therefore, she made efforts to commemorate a day of May, in which she along with her supporters held the celebrations for Mother’s Day.
Anna Jarvis’ perseverance paid off in 1914, after countless efforts. And the historic moment arrived when President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation making the 2nd Sunday of May the official day to celebrate Mother’s Day.
