Having a period that lasts longer than usual is not uncommon and can be caused by a variety of factors.
Here are five possible reasons why your period may be lasting longer than usual:
1) Hormonal changes, as fluctuations in hormones can cause irregular periods that may last longer than normal;1
2) Stress, as stress can cause a disruption in your menstrual cycle;2
3) Changes in contraception, as switching from one form of contraception to another can cause your cycle to become irregular;3
4) Excessive diet and exercise, as not eating enough or exercising too much can cause irregularities in your cycle;4 and
5) Illness or disorders such as fibroids, PCOS, endometriosis and PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) can cause menstrual periods to last longer than usual.5,6
However, for women in their late 30s to early 40s, a longer period could be a sign of perimenopause- the time before menopause when hormone levels begin to change.7
During this period, women may experience irregular periods which can last longer than usual. If you are experiencing longer periods, it is best to speak to your doctor to determine the cause and discuss potential treatments.
